During last week, David, Yun, Madison, and me worked as a group on devising and performing. Around the big topic "Fences", we came up with the idea of a boy who is bullied by others and refuses his sister's help, end up with being alone. And he finally realizes that how important his sister is. The breaking "Fences" had been fixed and a strong one replaced. In the progress of devising and performing, I helped my group to come up with the idea and go through the script we had and give advises to make the performance better. Because of I am the narrator, I kind of have to control the stage, and when we were practicing and memorizing, I always will give them a cue if they can not remember something. As a whole group, we always will have same idea and suggestions, so everything worked well. The hardest thing I think is trying not to memorize the scripts and lines. When you have a devising stage, you are not supposed to have a script, but for our group as beginners we wrote a script for ourselves. So, I was trying to not recite everything, but still focus on the topic. I found out that is so hard and even harder than just recite everything. The thing I have learned about is that trying to do two things at one time is very hard. And you can not learn anything when you are doing something else at the same time. When I was watching others’ performances I found out that for “Fences” this one word, different people will have different understandings and different ways to act “Fences” out. I think Cassidy, Grace and Danny’s story is the most interesting one, and has the deepest meaning inside of the story. The “Fences” in their story is two different personalities inside of one person, and that person always struggled inside of her heart. And use the chance to talk with the psychotherapist, she has a chance to get rid of the dark side of herself. In their story, the “Fence” broke at the end, which is the biggest different than our group’s story. Our “Fences” got fixed at the end. But the same thing is that both two groups had a happy ending for their stories. Even our stories is two totally different sides.
