Caroline's Wedding
"Caroline's Wedding" is a story that is told in the first point of view, but, the main narrator is Grace which is Caroline's sister. The story starts with Hermine is really happy about Grace's success in getting the American citizenship. Caroline is already an American citizen because she was born on the American soil. She is going to marry a man called Eric which is an American. However, Hermine wants Caroline to cancel the engagement, because she wants Caroline to marry a young Haitian man. In my opinion, Hermine is a very traditional woman, she thinks Caroline is already an American citizen and she said in the book Caroline is already thinking herself as American. So, Hermine wants Caroline to remember that she is a Haitian, and she wants her to know about the Haitian history and remember them. Although Hermine was trying to do things to detach Caroline and Eric, she is always just saying it, instead of really did something that actually separates Caroline and Eric.
There is an obvious connection between this story and the story "Nineteen Thirty-Seven" when Grace and Caroline talked about the game and played the game that Hermine taught them. It is the same game that Josephine and Jacqueline played. It is proof that Hermine is from Ville Rose and part of the women's society the one that Josephine and her mother were in. Hermine came into the room and tell them about the death of refugee women. During the ceremony/Mass, the pregnant girl Celianne from "The Children of the sea" came and gave a special prayer to all the Haitian refugees.
After Hermine and Grace went back home, Caroline is still in bed. And she did not want to rush to pack up to quick to move out, she is afraid to hurt her mother. Eric and Caroline are planning to have a small wedding instead of a formal on in a church.
Caroline tells Grace that she dreamed about their father, in the dream, they are chasing after him but never catch him. They only share the dreams with each other, they never tell Hermine, because they know that she will go search a lot and being superstitious.
When Eric prepared dinner for Hermine, Grace, and Caroline, Hermine did all the mean things that she can do to show her dissatisfied, such as not eating the food Eric prepared. However, in the letter, she showed how she expected and can't wait for Caroline and his marriage. And she is really happy about them and she loves him so much, she will they could have a good life. It is the biggest contrast in this story in my opinion.
There is an obvious inclusio, in the end, Grace got her American passport, and Hermine is cooking the bone soup, just the same as the beginning how the story starts off.
