New York Day Women
It is the first story that has a specific city name in the title, also it is the first time that the story is taking place outside Haiti. It shows the shift from Haiti to New York just like Edwidge Danticat herself own life experience. It is also the first story that gives me a feeling that is happened present, more like a journal, unlike other stories you can tell it is a story that happened in the past.
This story is also focusing on the relationship between parents/mother and children. The misunderstanding, miscommunication, and the big relation gap between parents/mother and children.
In this story, Suzette found out her mother is walking on Manhattan's street which is weird because, in her mind, her mother would never leave the house in Brooklyn, she will just watching TV and sitting in the sofa for the whole day. Obviously, she is so surprised and confused when she sees her mother across the street. So, she decided to follow her mother. She found out that her mother is buying American food (hot dog) and doing things that she can not understand and is so different from the image that she had in her mind of her mother. Her mother's final stop is at the park, and at the park, she sees her mother with a little boy and the boy's mother. Suzette finds out that her mother is actually working as a baby-sister, and probably for a long time. She realizes that there has been misunderstanding for the whole time. She started to understand and will give her mother seat when they are on the subway because she is working for the whole day, instead of her wrong thought which is that she is watching TV at home for the whole day.
