Chapter 1&2
The story is set on an island, Jewel of the Antilles.
The main character is the black young peasant girl, who is named by Mama Euralie and Tonton Julian in chapter 2, her name is Desiree Dieu-Donne.
There is Monsieur Bienconnu, he is the village centenarian who tells all the stories about gods who give goods and benedictions to the peasants. And he is the one who blames all man for destroying the goods that God had brought to them.
Asaka, goddess of the earth, she brings fruits, trees, and all plants and growing things.
Agwe, god of the sea, of many waters. He adored Asaka, he works with her, he gives nutrition of her fruits and rains for her plants to grow.
Mama Euralie and Tonton Julian are two peasants that live realistic, in my opinion.
Chapter 1 is basically stating the background information, provide the setting and introducing the characters to readers. It tells the peasant girl first saw a car, and she is very curious about the outside world.
