Chapter 3~5 Notes

Desiree heard the noise, she saw a broken car and a young man who got hurt. She tried to find someone else for help but she did not want to leave him alone. She sang a song and other peasants appeared. Desiree asked Tonton Julian to help to bring him home. She thought that this young man was the will of the Gods. Monsieur Bienaime came and saw the young man and said that he was definitely a creole boy. Then they decided to let Tonton Julian travel to the rich cities and towns in the direction that the hurt man had been heading. Desiree thought that the goddess Erzulie (the Goddess of love) had asked this of her, and Agwe had demanded it. Although the gods are not seen in this chapter, Desiree believes that their powers enchant her. She was somehow controlled by them, and her wish has came true. She also convince herself that these gods made her to take care of the people. Desiree are carefully looking after her patient. Her concentration raised the fears of Mama Euralie. Mama Euralie afraids that Desiree will leave them some day. One day when Desiree goes back to the room, she finds out that the man opens his eyes, but he still cannot talk. Then, a terrible storm raids the village. Mama Euralie then curses the Gods, she is very sad and wants to know why the Gods do such things to her. Even though she is desperate, she holds the young man hard and tells him that she will protect him: "I'll protect you. I'll do battle, if battle need be done - with the gods, even with my own Agwe, to keep you alive." When everyone falls asleep, Desiree is still looking after her patient. Desiree sees a demon. In order to save the young man's life, she prayed to the Gods, to Agwe, to Erzulie, that she will even give her soul for the life and happiness of her love. After that, the demon went away. Then, one day, a helicopter arrives at the village. A rich man comes down to the village and said that he is the young man's father - Monsieur Beauxhomme. He claims that Tonton Julian leads his way to find the village. Then he gives about 1 dollar to Mama Euralie as the thank you gift. The helicopter breaks Desiree's heart. She thinks this is the punishment from the Gods, as she holds him back from the evil. Later, Tonton Julian returns. He tells the journey to the peasants and describes Monsieur Beauxhomme as an rich and arrogant jerk. Even though he only gives him five gourdes, Mama Euralie comforts him that they can uses this money to buy seeds, so that their land will be rich.
