Chapter 12~14
When Desiree woke up, she saw that Daniel's godmother Mathilde is standing beside the bed. Desiree told her that she was sent by the gods, but this made the woman mad. When she asks Desiree to leave, Daniel stops her. Daniel tells Mathilde that Desiree has given him hope and it is the first time he has slept an entire night and has feeling refreshed after waking up. Then, Daniel's father Gabriel comes in. When Gabriel wants Desiree to leave, this time Mathilde stops him. Mathilde tells Gabriel that they have tried everything, and why cannot they just trust Desiree this time. Soon after, Gabriel walks out of the room without looking back. After days and days cure, Daniel is getting better and he falls in love with Desiree. After Daniel is getting completed good, it is time for Desiree to leave, but she does not want to leave. Daniel asks Mathilde to make his mistress into a grand lady. Then, dressmakers were hired, and hairdressers, and shoemakers. Every girl is jealous at Desiree, they are all thinking that how did a poor, black peasant girl win the heart of Daniel who is from the rich family. They are saying that Andrea Galimar should be the one who be with Daniel. One night when Desiree is looking out of the window, she sees a man who stands in the shadows of the trees---Lucifus.
Daniel is waiting for a chance to amaze his father. When the day arrives, the big balloon is prepared by the decorators, the floors are waxed to an incredible smoothness and brightness, all the patrons are invited and his father arrives. Then Desiree appears. She looks so beautiful in that white dress. Everyone is amazed by her and starts to praise her (maybe also praise Daniel?). However, when she smiles at Daniels father, he happens to be smiling to another, he is not responding to her. After that night, she becomes the princess of the hotel. Every day she wears different and beautiful dresses, and no one is talking bad thing about her. But then, Mathilde reaches to her and asks her to leave again. She tells Desiree that peasants will never be married with the rich. They hate the peasants and they are from two different worlds, and this is the curse of the Antilles, created by the enslavement of their fathers. This scared Desiree, and she starts to run away from everything. When she runs to the garden, she stops and trying to find a Papillon. Suddenly, she sees Lucifus, then Lucifus notices that she is the peasant girl and then Papa Ge possesses him. Even though possessed, he found his arms shackled by Desiree's elegance. He dares not to touch her. Desiree then turns quickly to seize the Papillon, but the butterflies all fly away.
Andrea Galimar comes back. All of a sudden, Desiree starts to hear all the gossip and bad things that are dropped by dressmakers and maids. She feels anxious and starts to cry out and pray to Agwe and Erzulie and ask them to protect her. After a streak of lightning flashed across the clear sky, she feels comfortable. But the lightning also shows the squat man standing in the garden below. One day she asks Daniel that is it true that he and Andrea are promised to each other. Daniel tells her that it is the wishes of the old, but they grew up now, so they are no longer bound to each other. After Daniel meets Andrea, he tells Desiree how perfect Andrea is, then Desiree thinks that she should share the joy that Daniel has. When Andrea finally comes to the hotel, Gabriel takes over the planning of the event, guests are all invited except Desiree. From the balcony Desiree sees Daniel and Andrea dancing with the music. That night, Desiree is removed from the rooms of Daniel and got put into a small room at the end of the hall.
